Meal Ministry

A generous man will himself be blessed for he shares his food with the poor.” Proverbs 22:9

Malnutrition is the insufficient, excessive or imbalanced consumption of nutrients.

Yes, in our home-town and in our neighborhoods, people who are poor or who live in poverty-stricken areas are at the greatest risk for hunger and malnutrition.

Malnutrition affects people of every age, although infants, children, and adolescents may suffer the most because many nutrients are critical for normal growth and development.

Seniors may develop malnutrition because aging, illness, and other factors can lead to a poor appetite, so they may not eat enough.

Alcohol can interfere with nutrient absorption, so alcoholics might not benefit from the vitamins and minerals they consume. People who abuse drugs or alcohol can be malnourished or underweight if they don’t eat properly.

The Hope Dining Room exists to ensure that every one in our hometown of Canton receives a nutritious meal six days per week in the pleasant surroundings of friends and neighbors.

Studies have found that in the US, over 5 million seniors (11.4% of seniors), experience some form of food malnutrition. Of these, about 2.5 million are at-risk of hunger, and about 750,000 suffer from hunger due to financial constraints.

Some groups of seniors are more likely to be at-risk of hunger. Relative to their representation in the overall senior population, those with limited incomes, under age 70, African American, Hispanic, never-married, and renters are more likely to be at-risk of hunger. While certain groups of seniors are at greater-risk of hunger, hunger cuts across the income spectrum. For example, over 50% of all seniors who are at-risk of hunger have incomes above the poverty threshold.
